Contract Law Essentials for Municipal Professionals

One-Day Workshop — Hosted by SAIT

Contracts are a key part of municipal operations, influencing relationships with contractors, suppliers, consultants, service providers, and community partners. Understanding the fundamentals of contract law can help professionals reduce risk, manage obligations effectively, and make informed decisions throughout the life of an agreement.

This practical one-day workshop provides participants with an introduction to the principles of contract law and their application in a municipal environment. Through real-world examples, discussion, and case studies, participants will gain a better understanding of how contracts are formed, interpreted, and managed, while developing the confidence to identify risks and respond appropriately when issues arise.

The workshop is based on the contract law components of SAIT’s Business Law curriculum and has been tailored to address common challenges encountered in local government and public-sector settings.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the key elements required for a legally enforceable contract.
  • Understand the roles of offer, acceptance, consideration, capacity, and intention in contract formation.
  • Identify common contractual risks and obligations.
  • Interpret basic contract terms, conditions, and warranties.
  • Recognize situations that may constitute a breach of contract.
  • Understand available remedies and options for resolving disputes.
  • Apply contract law principles to procurement, project work, vendor relationships, and service agreements.

  • Foundations of Contract Law
  • Creating a Legally Binding Agreement
  • Essential Elements of a Contract
  • Contract Terms, Conditions, and Warranties
  • Contract Performance and Breach
  • Remedies and Dispute Resolution

  • Practical Municipal Contracting Scenarios

Delivery Format

  • 1-day instructor-led workshop
  • Interactive discussions and practical exercises
  • Real-world municipal and public-sector case studies
